Opening Ceremony 5th ITYIELds 2022

The creative industry is currently growing rapidly and creating new jobs through the creative sector which is estimated to contribute up to 10% of Global GDP by 2030. On the other hand, it is also important to strive for sustainable and inclusive economic growth. This was discussed in the opening of the 5th International Training for Young Islamic Economic Leaders (ITYIELDs) agenda organized by the International Program for Islamic Economic and Finance, University of Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta (IPIEF UMY) on Friday (29/7) in the Postgraduate Meeting Room of UMY. This Summer School activity has the theme ‘Creative Economy and Promoting Sustainable Development Goals’. The agenda was attended by 96 participants from 6 countries who attended face-to-face and online, namely Malaysia, Sudan, Somalia, the Philippines, Palestine, and Indonesia.

Prof. Dr. Endah Saptutyningsih, SE, M.Sc., Head of Economics Study Program FEB UMY said that currently Indonesia is facing challenges to increase economic growth but still have to preserve the environment. “Indonesia with the potential of existing natural and human resources is expected to encourage sustainable economic growth through the economic industry. Then how to deal with this challenge, we will learn with the experts and I hope this event will highlight the preparation for Indonesia’s sustainable economic development,” said the UMY Professor.

While in the discussion, Prof.Dr. Imamudin Yuliadi, SE, M.Sc., Professor of Economics at UMY said that in creating a creative economy in Indonesia, there are challenges that must be faced, including the global economic competition market, the promotion and protection of intellectual rights, innovation and cooperation networks, and limited funds. “Business actors need to continue to improve product and business innovation and creativity, increase promotion and cooperation with domestic and foreign business actors, as well as build an investment climate and merit system for business actors,” he explained.

With a different perspective, Mustafa Dababseh, Academician from Smart College for Modern Education Palestine said that talking about sustainable development also refers to the Islamic economic system. “When we talk about sustainable development, we are referring to the Islamic economic system which seeks to achieve real and comprehensive economic development for all aspects of life for all people in every place and time,” he said.

Mustafa also explained that conditions in Palestine have challenges to the Islamic banking system. sharia and a reluctance to make profitable investment decisions,” he added.

Meanwhile, in the specific discussion about SDG’s, Dr. Claudia Aravena, Academician from Herriot-Watt University United Kingdom stated that the implementation of the SDGs needs special attention to take into account the interconnections between elements in it in order to create success in implementing the SDGs. “Research and innovation play a key role in achieving sustainable development but must also go hand in hand with policy,” he said.

The 5th ITYIELDs event was held on July 25-6 August 2022 which was presented through 3 subject areas including financial systems, microeconomics and natural resources. (Sofia)
